Press Statement: Withdraw Foisted Cases against Adivasis and Leaders of Ryat Cooli Sangham (Andhra Pradesh) in Vizianagaram district.

Com M.Bhaskar Rao, leader of RCS(A) in Vizianagaram district was arrested in the thick of night on 27th June 2009 when he was sleeping in his house at Parvathipuram. The police also raided the house of another leader Com Srinu Naidu. The police officers declined to give the where about of arrested comrade stating that they had not arrested. Later the district Superintendent of Police told the media that Com M.bhaskar Rao was arrested at 4 pm on 28th June 2009 and was remanded to judicial custody. He also informed that he was arrested as he was accused in a case of attack on Panasabhadra village on 17th June 2009.

In the night of 17th June 2009, some people had raided in the houses of non-tribal farmers in Panasabhadra village of Makkuva mandal and took away jewelry and valuables. Some wall posters appeared claiming that this was a famine raid organized by Viplava Ryatu Cooli Sangham and Viplava Adivasi Sangham. This was widely reported in the media. Yet the police attributed this raid to the RCS (AP), foisted a case on 150 adivasis including the leaders of RCS(AP) and started raids to make arrests. Moreover, the SP told the media that RCS (AP) conducted this raid disguising itself as Maoists.

The adivasi movement in the Vizianagaram district of AP and the neighboring districts of Koraput and Rayagada of Orissa is continuing for the last 17 years struggling to gain their right over the land, forest and traditional rights of adivasis. It is also demanding the end if discrimination in education, health facilities and self rule of adivasi areas. Our movement in Vizianagaram district withstood the attacks unleashed by landlords, tyrants and police with support of the peoples organized strength and solidarity from the democratic sections.

The Chaasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh in Orissa is organizing the adivasis to restore their right over the alienated lands and forest. Under the leadership of CMAS, adivasis re-occupied the lands illegally occupied by a company called Esteem in the villages of Alamanda and Bandugaon. The initiative and active participation of adivasis in the movement for land, who were till the other day are docile, became a challenge to the landlords and the government. They are hell bent upon to suppress the movement in Andhra-Orissa border that is going on under the leadership of RCS (AP) and CMAS.

It seems they have taken the raid conducted by Maoists as a pretext to unleash repression upon the movement. The arrests and foisting false cases is part of the conspiracy to tarnish the image of the RCS (AP) and CMAS so that they could suppress them.

We call upon the Democratic organizations and persons to stand by the side of adivasis, to condemn the false propaganda being spread to tarnish the movement and express the solidarity to the struggling adivasi people.

S. Jhansi

President
